GIS Day 2025
University Libraries is spearheading on Nov. 18, a global celebration of geography. GIS refers to Geographic Information Systems, and GIS Day is dedicated to celebrating how those systems capture information about the Earth鈥檚 service, impacting everyday life, education and research.
The Libraries is partnering with the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service, Facilities Management and the Geography Department to host a day of networking and learning on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at Baker Center room 240/ 242, and presentations and community brainstorming will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The event is open to everyone.
Maps are one way to visualize the intersection of data and communication in a geographic context, says Jonathan Brier, Data Services librarian at University Libraries.
鈥溾 we would love to see anyone who is curious about creating a map or visualizing their data in a geographic context 鈥,鈥 Brier said.
The event will follow three ideas: improved storytelling through GIS technology, support at OHIO for mapping systems, and identifying and developing GIS skill building opportunities. Networking will also play a role in the event, allowing students to learn more about how they can integrate mapping into their studies.
鈥溾 that鈥檚 where the Libraries and Data Services intersect,鈥 Brier said. 鈥溾tory maps [are] one of the tools to better communicate your research or interest 鈥.鈥
Think, for example, of journalists who look to identify and visualize geospatial information in story coverage or historians who analyze changes in a specific region over time. Events like GIS Day celebrate the monumental changes in technology that allow everyone to see the world with more clarity.
This year, however, will feature more opportunities for the OHIO community and affiliates to highlight research and creative activities. Ultimately, this will allow the GIS community to explore its interests in a collaborative learning environment.
鈥溾 those who don鈥檛 even know what Geographic Information Systems are but are interested in the world around them should be at this event,鈥 Brier said, 鈥渁t least to meet others and help us learn better how to serve them.鈥
