has completed a $4 million renovation project that enhances daily life on campus through major improvements to Shannon Hall and its surrounding spaces.

The project brought upgrades to key infrastructure and community areas, improving comfort, accessibility and campus functionality. Work included a full HVAC system replacement, new ceiling tiles and lighting, and updated concrete walkways. The entrance to Shannon Hall now offers a more welcoming and accessible gateway to the building.

鈥淭his work reflects our commitment to safe, efficient and student-centered spaces that meet the needs of our campus community,鈥� said Dr. Lewatis McNeal, vice provost for regional higher education. 鈥淧roviding a high-quality educational environment is a top priority.鈥�

The renovations also support 鈥檚 broader strategy to invest in its regional campuses. In alignment with the University's strategic goals, the improvements enhance access, support academic excellence and foster student success through well-equipped, modern spaces. 

The project was led by and, selected through a competitive bid process. Local subcontractors, including of Wheeling, West Virginia, also contributed to the work.

Improvements to Shannon Hall鈥檚 infrastructure, particularly heating, ventilation and air conditioning, were paired with refreshed interior spaces to create a more comfortable and energy-efficient environment for students, faculty and staff.

鈥淲e鈥檝e seen a significant difference in how the building feels day to day,鈥� said Jacob Horton, manager of maintenance and operations. 鈥淔rom classrooms to common areas, the upgrades have improved both comfort and functionality.鈥�

The renovations also introduced new wellness and recreation spaces designed to support students beyond the classroom. The Bobcat Den, a workout and wellness room on the first floor, and the newly expanded second-floor lounge known as the Rufus Room provide opportunities for connection, collaboration and balance.

鈥淲orking in student services during the renovation, I鈥檝e seen firsthand how much these upgrades have improved the building,鈥� said Riley Broomhill, a student worker at OHIO Eastern. 鈥淭he improved lighting and better temperature control have made a big difference, and spaces like the Rufus Room and Bobcat Den give students a place to relax or take a break between classes.鈥� 

鈥淭hese new spaces reflect our commitment to fostering community and supporting the whole student experience,鈥� said Dr. Richard W. Greenlee, interim dean of campus and community relations. 鈥淲ellness, connection and collaboration are all important aspects of student success.鈥�

More updates are planned for fall, including a roof replacement and new exterior doors, as OHIO continues investing in long-term campus sustainability.

鈥淢uch of this work happens behind the scenes, but it has a significant impact,鈥� Horton said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about creating a space that feels welcoming every day.鈥�

As the new academic year begins, students at OHIO Eastern are already benefiting from the revitalized campus environment. This project is part of the University鈥檚 ongoing effort to create strong and supportive learning communities across all campuses.
