Physics Astrophysics Major (B.S.)

The Physics Astrophysics Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree provides a substantial introduction to classical and modern physics, with advanced course emphasis in theoretical and observational astronomy.

Students graduating with this degree have a good understanding of Newtonian mechanics, electromagnetic phenomena, thermodynamics, and special relativity along with expertise related to the physics of stars, the interstellar medium, and galaxies, and the methods by which each is studied.

Students will also gain practical skills from laboratory and computer programming courses.

Careers with a Physics Astrophysics Degree

Recipients of a B.S. degree in physics astrophysics possess high-level problem-solving skills that provide excellent preparation for graduate school programs in astronomy or astrophysics. This program can also prepare students for employment opportunities in research institutions, government, industry, or teaching.

Graduates are employed by institutions of higher education, multiple governmental departments, planetariums, non-profit organizations, and the aerospace, computer software, remote sensing, and communications industries. 

This degree also prepares students for graduate study in astrophysics and related fields.

Admission Requirements

No requirements beyond University admission requirements. However, it is recommended that students entering the program have at least a Math Placement Level II, or an ACT Math score of 24, or an SAT Math score of 560.

STEMstart Kickstarts Freshman Success in Science

A week before the fall semester officially began, a group of eager first-year students moved into their residence halls, ready to embark on a week of hands-on learning and skill-building. These students had signed up for STEMstart, an early-start program designed to prepare them for the rigors of college-level coursework in biology, chemistry and mathematics.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in a variety of academic sessions, field trips and interactive workshops, all tailored to equip them for the challenges of rigorous science and math courses.

Physics Astrophysics B.S. Courses & Curriculum

Students take at least 45 semester credit hours in PHYS and ASTR coursework.

Your coursework will include courses on Stellar Astrophysics and Radiation, Interstellar Medium and Galaxies, Observational Astrophysics, Relativity and Quantum Phenomena, and Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics.

Math coursework ranges from Calculus and Linear Algebra to Fourier Analysis and Differential Equations.
