Applied Mathematics Major (B.S.)

Applied Mathematics Major B.S.

The Applied Mathematics major is for students who seek a strong mathematical background and the ability to apply mathematics in other fields. The applied mathematics major offers a strong program in mathematical techniques and ways of thinking that can be used in a wide variety of careers. The major covers core topics that provide a common structure, while leaving flexibility to pursue topics of interest.

Students may choose from a wide variety of courses in subjects such as statistics, numerical analysis, real and complex analysis, Fourier analysis, linear and nonlinear programming, ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, algebraic coding theory, bioinformatics, and optimization. Students also take courses outside the Mathematics Department in fields where math is applied. In fact, many students in applied mathematics are enrolled in two majors.

  • Preparation for graduate or professional school
  • Elective fields of application in biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, finance, or physics
  • Careers in state and federal government agencies; scientific research and development services; communication firms; public and private K-12 education; institutions of higher education; computer services companies; software publishers; banks and credit unions; non-profit organizations; and chemical and pharmaceutical companies

Careers with an Applied Math Degree

Whether as part of a double major or alone, a degree in applied mathematics is a recognized intellectual achievement. It is marketable to a broad selection of employers or can be used as an entrance to a variety of graduate and professional schools.

Potential employers include, but are not limited to, the following: state and federal government agencies; scientific research and development services; communication firms; public and private K-12 education; institutions of higher education; computer services companies; software publishers; banks and credit unions; non-profit organizations; and chemical and pharmaceutical companies.

Applied Mathematics B.S. Courses & Curriculum

For a B.S. degree with a major in applied mathematics, a student must complete a total of at least 39 semester credit hours of mathematics courses at the 2000-level or above.

Students take Calculus I, II and III plus Engineering Programming and Differential Equation. In addition to required courses, students take courses in Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Computing, and electives.

Field of Application

Students also complete at least 12 hours of coursework at the 2000 level or above in a single field where mathematics has significant application, such as biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, finance, or physics.  Please consult with an advisor.

STEMstart Kickstarts Freshman Success in Science

A week before the fall semester officially began, a group of eager first-year students moved into their residence halls, ready to embark on a week of hands-on learning and skill-building. These students had signed up for STEMstart, an early-start program designed to prepare them for the rigors of college-level coursework in biology, chemistry and mathematics.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in a variety of academic sessions, field trips and interactive workshops, all tailored to equip them for the challenges of rigorous science and math courses.
