Mathematics Major B.A.

This Mathematics B.A. major is recommended for students who want to pursue a broad or liberal arts education with a concentration in the mathematical sciences, have plans for future education or employment in an interdisciplinary area, or desire a double major in mathematics and some other field.

The mathematics major offers a strong program in mathematical techniques and ways of thinking that can be used in a wide variety of careers. The major covers core topics that provide a common structure, while leaving flexibility to pursue topics of interest. This flexibility allows the mathematics major to be combined with other majors in the sciences, engineering, and technology to form a coherent undergraduate experience.

Careers with a Math Degree

Whether as part of a double major or alone, a degree in mathematics is a recognized intellectual achievement. It is marketable to a broad selection of employers or can be used as an entrance to a variety of graduate and professional schools.

Potential employers include, but are not limited to, the following: state and federal government agencies; scientific research and development services; communication firms; public and private K-12 education; institutions of higher education; computer services companies; software publishers; banks and credit unions; non-profit organizations; and chemical and pharmaceutical companies.

Admission Requirements

This program has no requirements beyond University admission and transfer requirements. However, it is strongly recommended that students satisfy at least one of the following before entering the program:

  • Have a least a 30 ACT Math score or a SAT Math score of 680 or above
  • Have scored at least a 3 on the AP Calculus AB exam
  • Have scored at least a 4 on the AP Statistics exam

Mathematics B.A. Courses & Curriculum

For a B.A. degree with a major in mathematics, a student must complete a total of at least 30 semester credit hours of mathematics courses at or above the 2000-level in mathematics.

Students take Engineering Programming and Calculus I, II and III, followed by courses in Discrete Math, Linear Algebra, and Applied Modeling, plus a Proof-based Course.

 

 

STEMstart Kickstarts Freshman Success in Science

A week before the fall semester officially began, a group of eager first-year students moved into their residence halls, ready to embark on a week of hands-on learning and skill-building. These students had signed up for STEMstart, an early-start program designed to prepare them for the rigors of college-level coursework in biology, chemistry and mathematics.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in a variety of academic sessions, field trips and interactive workshops, all tailored to equip them for the challenges of rigorous science and math courses.
